Young Environmental Enviro101 Series

In a country whose unemployment rate continues to clime at 8.1%, the EBC is looking to invest in jobs that are sustainable, in both senses of the word. Both Green Jobs and Green Collar Jobs, (the industry term for environmentally related manual labor jobs) are seeing steady growth, largely due to the project-essential expertise that comes with such positions. Whereas jobs in business, communications and service are more easily pared down or consolidated into fewer positions, Green Jobs are ensured a certain amount of security based on the industry's steady growth and the nature of the positions to be relatively cut-back proof.

EBC's Young Environmental Professional Committee will be focusing a series of "Enviro101" conferences and networking events on such growing industries, featuring young professional speakers presenting on their personal experience in their field. Our dual goals are to give young professionals the opportunity to gain speaking experience and composure in front of a diverse crowd, to educate our YEP community on career advancement opportunities, and to provide a forum for networking with peers.

Our first Enviro101 installment has the EBC partnering with Nexus/Green Roundtable, and will make use of their LEED certified space to focus on the topic of becoming a LEED AP. The event has been scheduled for the evening of April 23rd and is sure to see high attendance. Registration information will be emailed to the YEP listserv- to be added, contact jhughes@ebcne.org

EBC Sustainable Marketing Forum

Yesterday was the first planning meeting of the EBC Sustainable Marketing Forum! We convened at our member Triumvirate Environmental's offices in Somerville to discuss the Forum's mission statement and plan topics for future meetings. It was a very successful meeting, with a diverse group of attendees with wide areas of expertise.

I think it's going to be a fantastic resource for our members. Mark Campanale, (who is now the forum chair) first brought up the idea of putting the committee together as a way for the EBC community to have access to the latest ideas in Green Marketing techniques, and after yesterday's meeting I can see it expanding into many different directions having to do with branding, new media, networking and using green business practices as a way to promote business.

I came away with several ideas for the EBC's own marketing plan just from that one meeting, (anyone want to tweet with the EBC?) so I'm really looking forward to the next one on December 2nd. You can register for the meeting on our website. Also, please email me if you'd like to be added to the listserv!

New Website Pictures!

Last week, Membership Director Danielle Pillion and I took a fall sojourn around the metro region with a photographer in pursuit of new images for the EBC website. Our goal is to have the website represent New England, the environmental industry and the diversity of our member's interests, and we're pretty proud of how they turned out!

We visited the iconic BEW Local 103 wind turbine, visible from RT 93 on the way in and out of the city. (Click image to enlarge.)

We stopped by our member company Nutter's office to take a great shot of their building's green roof.

We braved the traffic, (in a ridiculous looking but wildly fuel efficient bright yellow mini cooper zipcar) and headed out to the Brockton Solar Brightfield. (Preotle, Lane, & Associates and River's Edge Development received an EBC EBEE Award this year for their work on this Brownfields redevelopment project.)

And of course, we took a beautiful view of the Boston cityscape as it appears from East Boston.

Let us know what you think! There's still a few of the older ones up on the website, but we'll be cycling some of those out and bringing in newer ones. You can see the rest of the new photos up on the EBC Website.
